Yes Sir ...

over the years i have noticed how the meaning of words has changed.  as my kids became teenagers, i was re-educated (for survival sake) to new meanings of every day words.  words such as 'sick' and 'bad' meant something totally opposite of what i learned as a kid - they are actually good things in teen lingo.  when my son said 'mom, you are so fat' .. i was taken back until he explained that was a good thing .. it meant i was awesome.  ugh.  there were days that my head was so confused with the twisted meanings of these words, but somehow i adjusted.  in time, the teen lingo became part of my vocabulary (for survival sake .. lol) and my brain made the word transition with no problem.  sick meant awesome and bad meant good.

i have been thinking about this phenomenon over the past weeks in another instance.  it is not rare that men in this lifestyle will require their wives to address them by 'Sir' as a title of respect.  some require it all the time while others may require it while in discipline mode.  that title, however, does not have a meaning of respect for me ... it has been watered down, perverted and misused over the years to the point that it actually means something opposite to me.  i felt very fortunate, therefore, when my hubs to be (H2B) didnt require it of me.

H2B is a very down to earth, humble, intelligible man of integrity.  he has this way about him that makes one feel at ease almost from the instant he comes into their presence.  he is a gentle giant, caring, nurturing and very loving.  pride is not one of his stumbling blocks, ego is kept in its rightful place and fed the proper nutrients.  he is a self-proclaimed hillbilly and very comfortable with it.  he is the smartest red neck hillbilly i have ever met!  and the wit of this guy ... O M G!

ok, so all this to say, i have felt that addressing him with the title 'Sir' would not fit him.  however, i didnt understand the power of the title.  i had forgotten its true meaning.  i had failed to realize that if there was ever a man who deserved the title it was my H2B.  he redefines the title so that it carries its original meaning.  he is the King of my castle, my Knight in shining armor, one of noble character.  he is my Sir.

(this is a t-shirt i made H2B for Christmas)
the other day he asked me a question that didnt hold much importance, it was more of a conversation starter.  my answer was 'yes Sir.'  we were IMing so i didnt 'see' his face, but i could feel his face beaming with pleasure.  he said 'oooooohhhh, i could get real used to those kind of manners.'  it spoke volumes to me.  he didnt say 'i could get used to hearing that' or 'i could get used to that title' ... he saw it as 'manners.'  i then asked him a couple days later when i again addressed him with 'Sir' and he made a similar comment how it made him feel.  he said it makes him feel respected like an authority figure.  goodness.  i have been withholding from him the very thing i wanted to give to him.  oy!

i know there will be times that the defiant and rebellious self will struggle with this issue.  i know there is a lot in me that still needs to be purged to be the woman i desire to be ... that he deserves.  but i believe the paradigm shift of my heart has shown me the power of submission in a very real way.  as i continue to strive for excellence as a woman, as a woman submitted to her man, i am excited to learn more about the power behind following a great leader.

HH - I will never forget the first time I said "yes sir" to hubby, he glowed. It is such a simple thing to say but like you it always had negative connotations with me also. But now I try to say it more and more and not just when I am in trouble :-)

Hugs to you and your King

What a beautiful post! I love what he said to you, about manners. He sounds like an amazing guy. I only say sir when I'm in trouble, I'm not sure he wants it other times. He has never told me, it just slips out sometimes.
